About the Board Certification System for the Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Our Society’s Board Certification System for the Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) began in 1973 with the aims of developing dentists or medical doctors with the special knowledge and experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and of developing and improving the clinical practice level of oral and maxillofacial surgical treatment. Between the first certification in August 1980 and April 2012, 2,056 specialists have been certified. In 2003, we organized a Board Certification System Review Committee to undertake a fundamental review of the system that certifies the Specialist in OMS, and in October 2004, enacted the regulations for the new certification system followed by regulations for that Committee and enforcement bylaws in October 2005. Regarding the qualification conditions and examinations, the training curriculum was reviewed to emphasize clinical practice, and the new regulations adopted practical examinations for tested subjects. The first certification of specialists in OMS under these new regulations began in 2008.
